Why Oscar Isaac Joined The MCU As Moon Knight After Role In X-Men: Apocalypse

With Marvel and Disney+’s slate of original series continuing to grow, fans are getting more excited about the future of the MCU's Phase Four. One particularly exciting show is Moon Knight, starring Oscar Isaac. The Star Wars actor is not a stranger to the world of Marvel superheroes, as he was in X-Men: Apocalypse. And now he’s revealing why he’s officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the 2016 movie.

Oscar Isaac spoke to Games Radar about his new superhero role. He’s definitely not the first one to previously take a Marvel role outside of the MCU then wind up in the MCU. Chris Evans and Michael B. Jordan both did it previously, after all, so it’s not unprecedented. Moon Knight is setting up a completely new story. Isaac revealed why he was excited to get back into a comic book world after X-Men: Apocalypse:

It’s not so much about the genre of things. It’s the people. And is there room to do something interesting in it? And sometimes there is, and you think there will be. And sometimes it turns out there isn’t. So with this – I love the people involved. I thought there was an incredibly unusual story to tell within the world of, you know, the superhero language. But we’re making something that’s quite different, and that doesn’t follow the same... not necessarily even logic of what a lot of superhero films do.

The “superhero language” is not always easy, but it does seem like it’s easier if there are so many great people involved in the project that all want to tell this authentic and different story about such an iconic character. It’s one of the reasons why Oscar Isaac decided to take Moon Knight, as he mentioned the opportunity to do more:

I think because of that, I just found an opportunity to do something that I’ve not done at all yet, and to have a lot of creative collaboration with the rest of the people making it.

It’s not surprising that Oscar Isaac would add another Disney role to his resume, especially since he seems pretty familiar with the superhero ones. It will be interesting to see just how different Marc Spector (a.k.a. Moon Knight) will be from his X-Men: Apocalypse character of En Sabah Nur (a.k.a. Apocalypse), considering Apocalypse was a villain whereas Moon Knight is a hero.

Currently there is no premiere date for the new Disney+ series, as it’s currently filming, but hopefully we'll get a date later this year. Fans have yet to get a date for Ms. Marvel, so it’s likely we’ll be getting a date for that first. Keep an eye out for any more updates involving Moon Knight and take a look at our 2021 fall TV schedule to see what shows to look forward to!
