Amazon’s anti-superhero series The Boys is getting ready to drop its highly-anticipated third season, hopefully later this year. While there are plenty of storylines that fans are excited about, one that fans are the most excited for is the introduction of Soldier Boy, Vought’s first superhero, who was also in World War II. With Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles stepping in to play the hero, he is reuniting with SPN creator Eric Kripke, who is also the creator behind The Boys. Kripke recently revealed just how Ackles wound up playing Soldier Boy, and it’s a story of chance and of fate.

Ahead of Season 3 of The Boys and following the show’s multiple Emmy nominations, Eric Kripke chatted with Vanity Fair about the upcoming season and the ridiculousness of the series. The creator admitted that Jensen Ackles wasn’t actually his first choice at Soldier Boy, but some things are just bound to happen when you least expect it:

We had written Soldier Boy long before I cast Jensen. The majority of the guys we were looking at for that part were actually quite older than Jensen. Because it’s a World War II hero. Yet, it’s so funny how these things sometimes happen. Jensen called me and I’m not on the show anymore but we keep in touch and text every so often. But he happened to call me and we were just chatting and I’m like well I’m prepping Season 3 of the show, and I have this character Soldier Boy, and it was a real pain in the to cast, and I haven’t really found anyone. 'Hey, wait a minute, do you want to do it?' I sent him the script, and he’s like, 'Oh my God, I totally want to do this.' Less than a week later, he was cast. He just happened to call that day is one of the big reasons he got that part.

The Supernatural star was first announced to join Season 3 of The Boys as Soldier Boy in August 2020. Fans were more than ecstatic to know that Jensen Ackles would not only be reuniting with Eric Kripke for a new project, one that would give him a chance to be less like Dean Winchester and do something that would be more raunchy. When Ackles got to work on Season 3 earlier this year, he soon became unrecognizable as he had a full beard -- but fans were still loving it. The actor has been included in multiple behind-the-scenes pictures, which has been keeping everyone occupied until he makes his big The Boys debut.

Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy will definitely be something to look forward to when Season 3 of The Boys finally premieres. Just how he will make his way back into Vought and The Seven will be one to look out for though! There are plenty of storylines in Season 3 that will surely pique fan interest; it's just that the Supernatural/ The Boys connection with this particular story has really been the most fun to watch.
