Even before joining the Season 23 cast, Brandon "Frenchie" French was been a fan of Big Brother for a long time. And for anyone wondering, he's definitely aware he made some mistakes during his time on the show. After one of the most chaotic Head-of-Household reigns in quite some time, the former Houseguest has already thought a lot about what went wrong, and has decided he's not interested in watching the rest of Season 23.
I had the chance to speak with Frenchie the morning after his Week 2 eviction, and I brought up that he could be heard mentioning on the live feeds that he wouldn't watch the rest of the season when he got home. Knowing that the Houseguest has been one to change his mind, I asked if he's reconsidered his viewership stance and received the following response:
I haven’t, I haven’t. It’s not that I don’t have interest in it, just... I will tune into the finale. I will root for anybody in that house. At the end of the day, we’re people, and [other] people tend to forget that. They just think we’re just somebody there on screen that is there to do whatever we want. But we do build bonds in that house. I am rooting for Derek F. I love him to death, Hannah is an awesome game player. I just want these people to be successful in life, and I’m rooting for each and every one of them.
The Big Brother player was certainly more "Brandon French" than "Frenchie" during our conversation, and he expressed that the sting of his eviction was still there. As he'd stated, he formed real bonds with the people in that house just by living next to them for the past couple of weeks. Those various relationships would certainly make it that much more difficult to watch and actively enjoy the game, though Frenchie said he will indeed tune in for the finale. One would assume he'll be present for it as well, either remotely or in person, though Big Brother has yet to publicly share its plans for the Season 23 finale.
Frenchie spoke to the bonds formed in the house being part of the reason behind his decision not to watch Big Brother Season 23, but there also seemed to be a hint that he may have known how his gameplay has been received by online audiences. Frenchie explained to me how his fandom influenced his time in the house, and confirmed that in addition to staying away from the game, he'd also be stepping away from social media for a time as well.
You gotta decompress. You know, coming into this game, if I made any mistake - I made mistakes in this game, let’s be honest - my main mistake was playing the way that the fan in me wanted to see. I didn’t play for me. I played for as a fan what I wanted to see happen the season. And that was very detrimental to my game. If I could do it all over again I would’ve played for me and not worry about the rest of that. But, I did, I played to the fan of me and it was fun, it was a blast.
While he certainly regrets coming into Big Brother with the mindset of giving the fans what they want (at least the likeminded ones), Frenchie certainly took solace in being able to give viewers one of the most entertaining weeks we've seen in some time. While fans may not be able to commend his gameplay, perhaps they can cut him some slack for the entertainment he delivered in his short tenure in Season 23.
