Buffy The Vampire Slayer Star Sarah Michelle Gellar Is Returning To TV With A Sweet New Show

There's pretty much no doubt that Buffy the Vampire Slayer will go down in history as one of the biggest cult hits television has seen. And, of course, a large part of the show's enduring popularity is due to Buffy Summers herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar. While the former Chosen One hasn't had any long stints on TV since her time saving the denizens of Sunnydale from a wide variety of supernatural Big Bads (and doesn't plan to be a part of the new reboot), that might be changing relatively soon, as Gellar has signed up for a sweet new show.

According to Variety, Sarah Michelle Gellar is now set to star in a new YA series for Amazon, Hot Pink, and the show has already been ordered to pilot by the streamer. The comedy is loosely based on the novel What Girls Are Made Of by Elana K. Arnold, which was a finalist for the 2017 National Book Award for Young People's Literature.

The book follows 16-year-old protagonist Nina Faye, who's mother told her, two years prior, that there is no such thing as unconditional love. This now means that Nina will do whatever she can to prove her worthiness to her boyfriend, but when he breaks up with her, Nina finds herself lost, and decides to figure out what the conditions of love really are.

Hot Pink was created by Elisabeth Holm (Obvious Child), and she will also executive produce, along with Desiree Akhavan (The Miseducation of Cameron Post) and Rebecca Green (It Follows), while Akhavan is also set to direct the pilot. We don't know just yet who Sarah Michelle Gellar will be playing in the new project, but considering that her part is listed as a starring one, my bet is on her stepping into the less-than-optimistic shoes of Nina's mom.

If you've seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer (don't pretend that you haven't), you'll know that Gellar can handle pretty much anything that could be thrown her way in Hot Pink. She was able to help make a character who could have been rather unlikable, despite her world-saving ways, someone who was still able to make mistakes as we rooted for her to triumph over every adversity, whether it be magical and dangerous, or a situation that many teenage girls know well.

Even though Gellar hasn't found a long-standing TV home since Buffy ended in 2003, the Scooby-Doo and Cruel Intentions actress hasn't been completely absent in recent years. Gellar starred in the short-lived series Ringer and The Crazy Ones between 2011 and 2014, and has also filled her time with voice roles on shows like The Simpsons, American Dad!, and Robot Chicken. She also surprised fans when she showed up on the series finale of The Big Bang Theory in 2019. Through every project, Sarah Michelle Gellar has shown a gift for everything from silly comedy and dry humor, to horror and heavy, badass dramatic roles, so I really can't wait to see what she does with her part in Hot Pink.

Hot Pink is still in the very early stages, so there's no word right now when we could see a full series or how many episodes that might entail, but we'll be sure to fill you in when we know more. In the meantime, check out what you can watch right now, with our guide to early 2021 TV premieres!
