You would think that, for an actor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s one of the highlights of the gig. The costume fitting. The first time that you see yourself as the live-action representation of the characters that fans have come to love (or despise) on the pages of the Marvel Comics. Wyatt Russell is inheriting a very special costume in the MCU as part of the ongoing Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. But when I asked him what he remembers most about the first time that he saw himself in the suit as the new Captain America, he talked about the challenges that come with making it all fit!
Wyatt Russell plays John Walker, a decorated U.S. soldier who is tapped to step into the shoes of Steve Rogers after Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) passes on the opportunity. Walker’s Cap costume is a modified version of the classic suit that Chris Evans made popular, and Russell talked about the process in our above, exclusive interview clip.
The way that he talks about it, you almost feel better for the comic book characters who get to wear a skin-tight leotard and have their costumes added in later, through CGI. Mark Ruffalo doesn’t wear torn purple shorts to play The Hulk, and Don Cheadle’s never really in the War Machine suit. They got it right! So, too, does Sebastian Stan, whose Bucky character basically just wears what Stan might wear out while walking around Berlin.
Not Wyatt Russell, who looks incredibly cool in the revamped Captain America costume for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but laid out the process and makes it sound like legit work. Russell told CinemaBlend:
It’s very specific. All the people who work on the costumes do such tedious work with moving this seam here and that, measuring from here to your belly button and ‘How long is this?’ and ‘How much bigger do you think you’re going to get? Because we have to adjust the suit!’ It’s so much stuff that it doesn’t always fit right. So there’s lots of fittings. You know, they want it to look like they want it to look. It’s a process. Like, I didn’t get the suit really right, in terms of how it was fitting on my shoulders, until like a month or two into shooting because it would pull down, or it would hurt, and there’s a suit underneath, and there are three pieces to the suit, and they lock different ways… I was like, ‘Holy God, this thing is difficult to wear.’
How much longer will Wyatt Russell get to wear it? It feels like the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is building to a point where either Sam (Anthony Mackie) or Bucky (Sebastian Stan) takes the shield back and assumes the mantle of Captain America.
