Selena Season 2 Will Focus More On Selena The Icon As She Becomes A Star

A lot of Selena: The Series Season 1 focused on the late singer's childhood, familial relationships, and the beginnings of her legendary career, but Season 2 of the Netflix show will see Selena as she becomes one of the most successful performers both north and south of the American-Mexican border. During a December 2020 interview with Oprah Magazine, Christian Serratos said there would be a lot more of Selena, the Icon, stating:

Our second part, we're going to see a lot more of the icon. I had a lot more to base the performance on — but it was nerve-racking because people know that Selena so well. There was added pressure.

Selena: The Series Season 1 ended with Abraham Quintanilla (Gabriel Chavarria) kicking his daughter's guitarist and future husband, Chris Pérez (Jesse Posey), out of the band and on his own at a gas station in the middle of the night. And since the show is based on the life of the late singer, Season 2 will also have a ton of personal stuff along with her rise to fame.

Selena Season 2 Will Dive Into The Late Singer's Marriage, In Addition To Her Rise To Fame

The first season of Selena: The Series told a great, empowering story of a family making their mark on the music industry, but it also dealt with the interpersonal relationships of the family, the band, and a certain love interest of the up-and-coming singer. During a conversation with Entertainment Tonight, writer and executive producer Moisés Zamora explained that the second part of the Netflix series will see how Selena grows as a performer, but also as a person, stating:

When putting this together, I saw Selena in three parts. You have like, one and a half here, with the early family struggles and how she gets on the road and she's coming of age. And then it's the big huge choice that is having this relationship and choosing love, perhaps at the expense of her career and the family. So, we wanted to end the season with a fork in the road and find out how how they all come to terms with making her own choices. The later part is as she gains her own independence and she's empowered to become a star. I do see that that evolution for her, and … the intention is for more episodes to come, and to show that trajectory of Selena as she essentially is a married woman and starts her journey as a crossover artist.

If Selena: The Series Part 2 covers the late singer's final years, there will be a lot to cover, including her elopement to Chris Pérez in 1992, the release of her third album "Entre a Mi Mundo," and the events leading to the murder in March 1995.

Natasha Perez on Selena: The Series

We Will Be Seeing More Of Natasha Perez's Yolanda Saldivar

We only got to briefly see Natasha Perez's portrayal of Yolanda Saldivar, the Selena Fan Club president and boutique manager who would eventually murder the singer at the Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi, Texas, in Selena: The Series Part 1, but anyone familiar with the story knows that she will be a major player when the show returns. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly on the day of the show's Netflix debut, Perez explained that she went to great lengths to best prepare for the role, including initially seeking permission to meet the real-life Saldivar, who is serving life in prison. When those plans didn't pan out, Perez did as much research as she could to best understand the woman behind the crime and make her portrayal as authentic as possible leading to the next season.

Christian Serratos on Selena: The Series

Christian Serratos Did Her Own Makeup For Selena Season 2

One thing that Christian Serratos really wanted to do to make her portrayal of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez as authentic as possible was to do her own makeup, similar to how the late singer did all those years earlier. In the same Los Angeles Times interview mentioned earlier, the Netflix star revealed one key way she better connected with the character during production of Season 2. For the second half of Selena: The Series, Serratos told the producers that she wanted to do her own makeup each day since that was something Selena did when she was rising to the top of the pop world.
