Station 19 ended the 2019-2020 TV season as one of the relatively few major network shows that actually got to air the intended finale, and the Season 3 cliffhangers have left fans with plenty to think about over hiatus. Andy's story in particular ended with more questions than answers, and now Station 19 executive producer Paris Barclay has shared that viewers will be surprised by what's in store for the first responder drama's leading lady.

Arguably the biggest cliffhanger of the Season 3 finale was Andy's discovery that her mother was alive after all. Andy reuniting with her mom shortly after her dad died along with her chance of ever getting answers from him makes Pruitt's demise all the more tragic, and probably frustrating for Andy. Speaking with TV Insider, Station 19 executive producer Paris Barclay revealed:

Her mother's arrival will be complicated [for Andy] but not devastating in the way that viewers might expect.

Surprises are definitely in store if Station 19 is subverting expectations, although any of us who have been expecting complications are on the money. Her reaction to her reunion with her aunt and then mom wasn't exactly overjoyed, but she had also been through a lot recently, and didn't have much time to process before the end of the finale. The Season 3 finale was originally intended to be part of a Station 19/Grey's Anatomy crossover, and had to be reworked when it became clear that Grey's would be one of the many shows that had to stop production early.

Speaking of Grey's Anatomy, Andy's husband was laid up at Grey Sloan in the Season 3 finale. Robert Sullivan got the surgery that could help him beat his addiction in the long run by hopefully reducing his pain, and Andy told him that she'd be by his side. She left to deal with her family issues, however, and it was looking like their marriage might be doomed in Season 4.

According to Paris Barclay, fans of the relationship are in for some good news. Barclay commented on the state of Andy and Sullivan's relationship in Season 4, saying:

Viewers will be surprised and somewhat delighted by the developments in that [relationship].

Unless Paris Barclay is referring to a subset of Station 19 fans who would be delighted by the downfall of Andy and Sullivan's marriage, I think it's safe to say that there really is hope for them yet despite the circumstances of their marriage.

Station 19 will return in a matter of weeks, and in a big way. Station 19 will kick off the night of November 12 with the Season 4 premiere that doubles as the first part of a crossover with Grey's Anatomy, and it won't just be a two-parter this time. The Grey's Anatomy Season Season 17 premiere event will actually be comprised of two episodes, meaning viewers are in for a solid three-part block of shared universe action. NBC won't be the only network with three hours of a shared universe in one night that week!

The Station 19/Grey's Anatomy crossover event begins with the Season 4 premiere of Station 19 at 8 p.m. ET on November 12, followed by two episodes of Grey's Anatomy starting at 9 p.m. ET, all on ABC. For more of what you can watch this fall, check out our 2020 fall TV premiere schedule!
