What Drew Barrymore Thought About SNL Spoofing Her Talk Show For Ellen Sketch In Season 46 Premiere

Drew Barrymore on The Drew Barrymore Show (2020

This weekend saw the highly anticipated season premiere of Saturday Night Live, which returned to the studio following “at-home” episodes and its summer hiatus. The pandemic-heavy episode was a lot different from what fans are used to, but it delivered plenty of laughs. One of the night’s funniest moments, however, came when the series spoofed The Drew Barrymore Show. Now, the eponymous talk show host has shared her response to the SNL sketch.

In the pre-recorded segment, Saturday Night Live’s Chloe Fineman took on the role of Drew Barrymore and managed to channel the energy of the enthusiastic star. The sketch also poked fun at some of the segments that have appeared on the talk show, including one in which Billy Porter sings to a flower. In addition to doing a spot-on impersonation of Barrymore, Fineman also channeled both Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, who appeared as guests on the faux show. Check it out for yourself:

It turns out Drew Barrymore was one of the many viewers tuning into SNL’s season premiere and, in an Instagram post, she delivered some positive feedback on the jokes. As a longtime fan of the comedy series, Barrymore was delighted that her talk show was brought into the mix. She also praised Chloe Fineman’s performance and sent love to Weekend Update. They say imitation is the highest form of flattery, and to be parodied by Saturday Night Live is a pretty serious honor. Sometimes it can be hard to laugh at yourself but, in situations like this, it’s important to know that it’s all being done in good fun. And thankfully, Barrymore seems to be a good sport.

Barrymore isn’t the only person in the past year who’s been impersonated on SNL and given high marks in return. Near the end of last season, Dr. Anthony Fauci was portrayed on the show by none other than Brad Pitt, who was the doctor’s first choice to play him. After Pitt made his debut, Dr. Fauci praised his performance for being “classy,” and Pitt would earn an Emmy nomination for his appearance.

In addition to the Drew Barrymore sketch, Saturday Night Live’s season premiere also offered another impersonation through the debut of Jim Carrey’s Joe Biden. Carrey, who followed in the footsteps of Woody Harrelson and Jason Sudeikis, was mostly well received in the role. Kate McKinnon also donned her glasses and black robe one final time to give a sweet tribute to late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Given the response to Chloe Fineman’s performance as Drew Barrymore, there’s a good chance she’ll likely reprise the role at some point in the future. And should this be the case, it will likely come as a comfort for her that Barrymore herself is supportive of her.
