The DC Extended Universe is a tricky place, which is constantly keeping moviegoing audiences on their collective toes. The universe recently expanded with James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which brought Task Force X back to theaters. But could a movie featuring Justice League Vs. Suicide Squad happen in the DCEU? Gunn recently shared his thoughts on the possibility.

James Gunn became a household name thanks to his work on the comic book genre, starting with Guardians of the Galaxy before pivoting to DC for The Suicide Squad. And since the DCEU has introduced teams of heroes and villains, fans are hoping they might finally crossover in an epic battle featuring the Justice League. James Gunn recently addressed this possibility, saying:

I don't know. I would have to think about it. [Laughs] I haven't put any thought into a Suicide Squad vs. Justice League movie. But it's not a bad idea, you know. But I think I've got to figure out who the Justice League is first, because I have no clue. I'm in the middle here of DC, everybody's always asking me, 'Is Henry Cavill still Superman?' I don't know who Superman is! Who knows?

He’s got a point. As previously mentioned, the DCEU is always growing and changing. And so before any possible Suicide Squad vs. Justice League movie can be produced, the future of cast members like Henry Cavill would need to be decided. Plus, there are a number of DC projects coming together that are set outside of the main timeline.

James Gunn’s comments to CNA come from the acclaimed filmmaker’s press tour promoting The Suicide Squad. Eventually the conversation turned to Gunn’s possible future in the DCEU, hopefully including the Justice League. And while Gunn seems interested to see the two teams of characters battle on the big screen, it sounds easier said than done.

Both The Suicide Squad and Justice League are currently available on HBO Max. You can use this link to sign up for the streaming service.

In his comments, James Gunn specifically references the unknown fate of Henry Cavill’s Superman. While he helped to kickstart the entire DCEU with Man of Steel, it’s currently unclear if/when the Enola Holmes actor will return to his signature role. And with Cavill also busy working on Netflix’s The Witcher, it seems like any possible return to Superman won’t be happening soon.

Still, comic book fans would likely lose their mind to see the Justice League and Suicide Squad collide on the big screen. While this type of a crossover would be an inevitability at Marvel, the DCEU has been embracing more standalone stories. So we might never actually get to see Harley Quinn facing off against the likes of The Flash-- although that character pairing does seem delightful.

Luckily for DC fans, we are getting a new team of superheroes in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam movie. The Rock’s title character will be facing off against the Justice Society of America, including Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), and Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell).

The Suicide Squad is in theaters now. Be sure to check out the 2021 movie release dates to plan your next movie experience.
