There are some high hopes for James Gunn’s upcoming The Suicide Squad (Not to be confused with 2016’s Suicide Squad, as this is NOT a sequel). Well, the hype level may have just been raised even higher as Margot Robbie just called James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad the GOAT of superhero films.

Now, that’s kind of hard to believe since we live in a timeline where The Dark Knight and Captain America: The Winter Solider both exist. But in a recent interview with Access Hollywood, Birds of Prey star Margot Robbie had this to say about James Gunn’s upcoming superhero epic:

Honestly, even if this movie wasn’t as incredible as it is, it’s still worth going to the theater because it’s so nice to be able to go to a movie theater again. But it just so happens that this is arguably one of the greatest, if not the greatest, comic book film ever made. And you don’t want to miss it.

Did she just say, the greatest comic book film ever made? I mean, that’s some high praise, indeed. Granted, a lot of this could just be Margot Robbie trying to build even more enthusiasm for the film, which comes to theaters and HBO Max simultaneously on August 5th. But still, when somebody makes a statement like that, the hype level goes from moderately hyped, to through the roof amped in only a few seconds.

The Suicide Squad will hit HBO Max the same time as theaters. You can use this link to sign up for the streaming service.

And the thing is, it’s not just Margot Robbie who is making such bold statements. In the same interview, David Dastmalchian, who plays The Polka-Dot Man as well as Piter De Vries in the upcoming Dune adaptation had this to say about James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad:

It’s the most bombastic, bloody, bawdy, crazy, comic book movie ever made. It’s James Gunn, and my God. You get to see Harley Quinn like you’ve never seen her before.

First of all, great alliteration. Second of all, damn. I mean, hot damn. I was kind of interested in this movie since I've loved James Gunn all the way back to his Troma days, and of course I love his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy series. But I’m going to be honest with you. The first Suicide Squad was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen in my entire life, and arguably has the worst Joker ever put to screen.

So, while I was definitely going to watch The Suicide Squad, which also stars John Cena, Idris Elba, Daniel Melchior, and Sly Stallone as a talking shark, as well as many others, I honestly wasn’t going to get my hopes up for the film. But now I’m definitely a lot more pumped than I ever was before that this could potentially be a fantastic comic book movie.

I mean, I doubt it will be Dredd good, as that is the correct answer to the greatest comic book movie of all time. But if The Suicide Squad can be even remotely as good as the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, then I think I will be very satisfied indeed.

But what are your thoughts? Do you think The Suicide Squad has the potential to be “greatest” comic book film ever made? Sound off in the poll below!
