Scream 5 Has Taken A Thrilling Step Forward, And Ghostface's Return Feels So Real

Ghostface in Scream 4

The horror genre is in the midst of a thrilling renaissance, with plenty of acclaimed projects hitting theaters and making money at the box office. This has also resulted in a number of beloved properties being revived, including the highly anticipated fifth Scream movie. Now Scream 5 has taken a thrilling step forward, and Ghostface's return has never felt more real.

The fifth Scream movie, titled simply Scream, wrapped principal photography back in November of 2020. From then the extensive post production process began, with the generations of fans anxiously awaiting the first glimpse at favorites like Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox. It turns out that Scream 5 is now completed ahead of its release this winter. As director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin shared:

Buckle up moviegoers, because we’re really going back to Woodsboro. It looks like the new Scream is all finished, months ahead of its highly anticipated release. While its contents remain to be seen, the slasher has never felt more real than in this moment.

The above image comes to us from the Twitter of Scream director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin. He’s sharing the responsibility of helming the project with collaborator Tyler Gillett, with the two previously working on acclaimed horror flick Ready or Not. That duo is tasked with continuing Wes Craven’s legacy, as Scream 5 will mark the first sequel not helmed by the late horror legend.

In the image we can see the title screen of the new Scream movie, which will no doubt show after a grisly opening sequence. The franchise has always been known for its cold opens, starting with Drew Barrymore’s iconic sequence from the original. With the new sequel now completely finished, smart money says that the pair of directors were able to achieve their vision… whatever that might be.

Not much is known about the new Scream movie, except that the story would indeed be taking the original heroes back to Woodsboro. Fans were thrilled to see that the trio of Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette would be back-- as well as Marley Shelton reprising role from Scream 4 as Judy Hicks. Plus there will be a new cast of young talent, including a ton of familiar faces.

While the new Scream will break new ground without Wes Craven, it seems that Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett had a vision that properly honored the late filmmaker’s legacy. Neve Campbell herself said that was what convinced her to return as beloved final girl Sydney Prescott.

Scream is currently set to arrive in theaters January 14th, 2022. In the meantime, check out the 2021 movie release dates to plan your next movie experience.
