How Tom Hardy Is Making Venom History With Let There Be Carnage

Tom Hardy in Venom: Let There Be Carnage's trailer

Over the past decade, various studios have created cinematic universes to house comic book properties. Sony was no exception, with Venom marking the first movie in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters. A highly anticipated sequel Let There Be Carnage will arrive in theaters this September, featuring Woody Harrelson as Carnage. And Tom Hardy is also making Venom history with the upcoming blockbuster.

Anticipation for Venom: Let There Be Carnage began immediately after the first movie hit theaters back in 2018. The credits scene teased the introduction of Woody Harrelson’s villain, and the public has been eager for any updates or footage from Venom’s sequel. In addition to playing his dual protagonist role, it turns out that Tom Hardy is getting another credit on the blockbuster: namely “Story by.”

This news comes to us from Empire, revealing that Tom Hardy is getting credit for working on Venom: Let There Be Carnage’s story, aside from playing Eddie Brock and voicing Venom. This shows how much the Mad Max actor seems committed to his signature comic book role, and explains just how intimately involved he was in Venom’s sequel.

Accompanying the announcement about Tom Hardy’s story by credit on Venom: Let There Be Carnage came a statement by writer Kelly Marcel. Marcel worked on the screenplay for the first movie, and is back writing the sequel. She explained how much Hardy is putting into his tenure as Eddie Brock/ Venom, saying:

This is new for him, to get credit, but it’s not new for him to be this involved. He’s absolutely 100 percent committed to everything that he does. He’s married to Venom. He loves this character. He’s very involved in what he thinks should happen.

Much like his signature character in Venom, it seems that Tom Hardy is also tethered to the fan-favorite symbiote. And it’s that care for the character and burgeoning franchise that resulted in the 43 year-old actor also working intimately enough to be credited on it. We’ll just have to wait and see how that labor of love translates to the big screen when Let There Be Carnage finally hits theaters.

Not much is known about Venom: Let There Be Carnage, resulting in the fans devouring any tidbit of information. Motion capture legend Andy Serkis is taking over as director, and he’s obviously got plenty of relevant experience. Add in the introduction of both Carnage and Shriek, and there’s no telling how savage the action sequences will be this time around.

While Venom 2 will have some newcomers, there will also be familiar faces for fans of Ruben Fleischer’s original 2018 blockbuster. Joining Tom Hardy is Michelle Williams as Anne Weying, as well as Veep’s Reid Scott as Dan Lewis. Hopefully we’ll get to see Anne once again merge with Venom, chomping off a head or two in the process.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage will hit theaters on September 21st. In the meantime, check out the 2021 movie release dates to plan your next movie experience.
