Spider-Man's Tobey Maguire Signed On To His First Role In Years, And It's Awesome

If you’re a superhero movie fan, particularly when it comes to Marvel, then chances are you’ve thought a lot about Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, which starred Tobey Maguire as the title Web-Slinger. Maguire’s first Spidey outing will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year, but as far as the rest of Maguire’s resume goes, he actually hasn’t appeared on screen in a movie since 2014’s Pawn Sacrifice, and we haven’t heard him in a cinematic setting since 2017’s The Boss Baby. Well, Maguire’s film hiatus is finally ending, as he’s signed onto a movie that was already a star-studded affair.

Tobey Maguire is among several new actors who’s joined Damien Chazelle’s next movie, Babylon. He’s also working on the upcoming Paramount Pictures flick as an executive producer with Helen Estabrook and Adam Siegel. According to THR, this latest round of additions for Babylon also includes Olivia Wilde, Spike Jones and Phoebe Tonkin.

Officially speaking, no details have been provided about who Tobey Maguire or any of the other new actors are playing in Babylon, which will follow the transition from silent movies to talkies in the late 1920s. That said, Maguire was rumored to be involved in the Damien Chapelle-helmed picture months ago, as he was listed on the Babylon IMDB page as playing film producer Irving Thalberg. Assuming this is true, then Maguire will participate in Babylon as an historical figure rather than one of its fictional characters.

Now there is one important thing to note: although Babylon is Tobey Maguire’s next confirmed movie, we might see him in a theatrical setting before that comes out. It’s been heavily rumored that Maguire will reprise his version of Peter Parker later this year in Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Andrew Garfield’s own Peter. This hasn’t been officially verified yet, and Tom Holland denied that either of his Spider-Man predecessors would appear. Nevertheless, suspicions to the contrary are still running high, especially since we do know for a fact that Spider-Man villains from other corners of the multiverse, like Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, will cause trouble in No Way Home.

In any case, we can at least count on Tobey Maguire working both in front of and behind the cameras on Babylon, which is Damien Chazelle’s fourth movie, having previously delivered Whiplash, La La Land and First Man to the masses. Along with the aforementioned actors, the feature’s cast includes Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Diego Calva, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, Katherine Waterston, Max Minghella, Lukas Haas, Flea, Rory Scovel, Samara Weaving, Eric Roberts, P.J. Byrne and Damon Gupton. Babylon has reportedly been described as “The Great Gatsby on steroids,” which is now extra fitting considering that Tobey Maguire played Nick Carraway in the 2013 film adaption of the F. Scott Fitzgerald story.

Babylon is set to begin shooting in Los Angeles next week, and will first open in limited release on December 25, 2022, followed by the wide rollout on January 6, 2023. Look through our 2021 release schedule to learn what movies are coming out in the nearer future.
