Patty Jenkins Responds To Geoff Johns’ DCEU Departure

Wonder Woman

Yesterday, the massive news came down that Geoff Johns would be stepping down from his positions as Chief Creative Officer and President of DC Entertainment to launch his own production banner, as well as continuing to write comics and produce for DC. Geoff Johns helped oversee most of the DCEU's films during his tenure in the executive post, including what many consider to be its best film, Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman. So in light of Geoff Johns' departure from his executive role in the DCEU, Patty Jenkins took time to offer some kind words to the DC icon.

Like Geoff Johns himself, Patty Jenkins seems excited for his next chapter and their continued collaboration with her positive sentiments here. Patty Jenkins strikes a congratulatory tone in her Twitter post, and I think that those who are familiar with Geoff Johns' comic runs may be inclined to agree. It's true that this is just another behind-the-scenes shakeup in a long run of them for the DCEU, but with Jim Lee taking over as Chief Creative Officer, that allows Geoff Johns to get back to doing what he does best, and that's putting words to paper and creating. As Patty Jenkins notes, Geoff Johns can now write and produce many new things, and hopefully being relieved of the burdens of the executive post will allow him to do just that.

While Geoff Johns may no longer be overseeing the DCEU as a whole, he will still play a role in its future. Geoff Johns co-wrote Wonder Woman 2 alongside Patty Jenkins and Dave Callaham. He will also have a producer credit on many upcoming DC properties, including an executive producer role on this year's Aquaman. But if Geoff Johns is known for one thing, it's his revitalization of the Green Lantern comic book series. So it is encouraging that he will still have a hand in bringing that mythology back to life on the big screen and finally giving it the movie it deserves in the forthcoming Green Lantern Corps, which will feature Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

Outside of producing and writing on the film side of things, Geoff Johns will also continue to fuel the DC machine with new stories on colorful pages. Geoff Johns will write a new Shazam! comic series to debut this fall, and timed perfectly to hype people up for the movie next year. He will also maybe, finally, provide some answers to questions he raised in DC Rebirth's Justice League #50 with the Three Jokers series. So like Patty Jenkins, there are a lot of reasons for us to be excited about what comes next for the DCEU and Geoff Johns.

Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 2 releases on November 1, 2019, but the next entry in the DCEU is Aquaman, which will put all theaters in the splash zone when it releases on December 21. Check out our guide for all of the upcoming DC movies.
